However, there is no word for wilderness in Spanish, which perhaps means that it is not a part of our modern culture. We have to coin a word for it by adapting the adjective "Silvestre" to come up with silvestría, a rough translation of the English word, wilderness.

Through images and by facilitating development of the spirit of adventure that we all have, Mexico Silvestre hopes that Mexicans will revive the need for the presence of wilderness in our lives and in our identity as a people. By appreciating it, it becomes ours again and, by being ours, we will protect it.

The Cozumel Photoshoot is a project that fulfills the two core strategies of Mexico Silvestre. The participants, with a spirit of adventure, are going to enter wild aquatic and terrestrial areas in search of images that capture the very essence of the place. These images will then become part of environmental education programs and to promote awareness of Cozumel Island as an eco-tourism destination while helping to foster and protect the Mexican wilderness.
